There are many surprises in life, and David Tolley’s path was changed by one such unforeseen event. Something unexpected happened on December 19, 1985, while watching Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show in the studio. Horatio Gutierrez, a classical pianist, was scheduled to

be the guest, but Carson revealed that he would be unable to perform because of a hand injury. Carson inquired as to whether anyone in the audience was able to play any unusual piano rhythms.

Tolley, who had studied piano as a child, adapted right away. He entered the stage and began to play the popular Cats song “Memory.” He became well-known for his surprising performance and was given a standing ovation by the audience.

Tolley’s phone began ringing nonstop the day after the event. He received calls offering him jobs on cruise ships, movie roles, and other opportunities. A chance meeting on a chat show late at night had permanently changed his life.
