What began as a celebratory night at PNC Park turned tragic on Wednesday, May 1, when 20-year-old Kavan Markwood of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, fell approximately 21 feet from the stands during a Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs game.
The accident, which occurred during the bottom of the seventh inning, shocked fans, players, and community members, casting a somber mood over what had been a spirited evening of baseball.
Witnesses reported that the fall happened just moments after Pirates legend Andrew McCutchen hit a go-ahead double, igniting excitement throughout the stadium.
In Section 142, Markwood had removed his shirt and was pouring beer on himself in celebration when he lost his balance and fell over a 36-inch railing, landing on the right-field warning track. Read more below
