Iconic singer Jill Sobule dead at 66 in house fire

Jill Sobule, the trailblazing singer-songwriter behind the 1995 hit “I Kissed a Girl”,

has died at age 66 after a tragic house fire on May 1, 2025, at her home in Woodbury, Minnesota. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Sobule was known for her fearless lyrics and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, tackling topics like anorexia, the death penalty, and identity through her music.

Her song “I Kissed a Girl” became the first openly LGBTQ-themed single to chart on Billboard, and her follow-up track “Supermodel” gained fame in the hit movie Clueless.Over a 30-year career, she released eight albums and became a respected voice in

folk-pop music. Her manager called her “a force of nature and human rights advocate.” Sobule was set to release two projects later this year, including a 30th-anniversary reissue of her Atlantic Records debut. Read more below
